  14. After calling O captain my captain "Crap..." I was challenged to write 
  15. something better. Being the professional stirrer I am, I proceeded to 
  16. write something worse!

  22. "Oh no!" she cried jumping out of bed. "I'm going to be late! I'm
  23. supposed to beam over in ten minutes!"
  24.  
  25. "The transporter is just down the corridor," he said soothingly.
  26. "Can't you stay for just a little longer?"
  27.  
  28. "No. I'm sorry but if I'm late I'll go down in Starfleet history
  29. as the only Ensign late to beam aboard her first assignment. I'd
  30. like to make my mark in history, but I'd rather be famous than
  31. infamous!" she shot back as she hopped in the shower.
  32.  
  33. "I'm sure the captain won't mind. I'll have a word to him for
  34. you," he said as he reached for the comm button.
  35.  
  36. "Don't you dare!" came the shout from the bathroom. "I can mess
  37. up my first day enough without you helping. You've already done
  38. enough."
  39.  
  40. "It's probably just as well then that we aren't ever going to see
  41. each other again then isn't it?"
  42.  
  43. "Oh I think our paths will cross again," she muttered.
  44.  
  45. "Pardon?"
  46.  
  47. "Oh nothing. I just couldn't get my hair to go right. There," she
  48. exited the bathroom. "How do I look?"
  49.  
  50. "Like someone who's gotten dressed in a rush and is going to be
  51. late anyway," he replied smiling.
  52.  
  53. "Computer, what is the time?" she enquired shoving her clothes
  54. into her hold-all.
  55.  
  56. "The time is fourteen hundred hours and one minute."
  57.  
  58. "Damn! Bye cutie-pie. Nice meeting you," she said giving him a
  59. quick peck on the cheek.
  60.  
  61. "Bye pumpkin."
  62.  
  63. She ran down the corridor with as much dignity as she could
  64. muster and burst into the transporter room breathing hard. She
  65. then proceed to calm herself as the operator informed her ship
  66. that  transporters had just come back on line. He gave her a sly
  67. wink and motioned for her to step onto the platform.
  68.  
  69. "Thanks," she muttered gratefully as he started the sequence. The
  70. operator just nodded in reply.
  71.                     ***********************************
  72. Captain Jean-Luc Picard was not feeling at all patient that day.
  73. First he had to go three hours out of his way to pick up a new
  74. crewmember, and then the planet's only transporter 'went off
  75. line'. He'd heard that excuse many times, and had even used it
  76. himself once or twice. That new Ensign had been late for some
  77. reason, and it made him irritable when he didn't know the full
  78. story. Worse still, his ship's counsellor and first officer were
  79. in sickbay.
  80.  
  81. Deanna Troi had picked up some sort of strange virus on her shore
  82. leave. The new Ensign was a Betazoid - a full telepath - and
  83. would be filling in for Deanna until she was well enough to
  84. reassume her duties. 
  85.  
  86. A kid. A child was filling in for Deanna. Oh she was nineteen,
  87. but that was a babe-in-arms compared to most of Jean-Luc's
  88. officer's. He didn't like the idea at all, but he had been told
  89. that Starfleet could not spare any trained personnel at the time,
  90. and that this Ensign would just be following Deanna's orders. She
  91. wouldn't really have to do much at all.
  92.  
  93. If only Deanna hadn't gone to Niseen VI for her holidays.
  94. Everyone knew that the chances of catching a disease there were
  95. phenomenal. But no. Deanna had to be stubborn and go there. Then
  96. she had to be like everybody else who goes there and catch a
  97. virus. Dr Crusher said there was nothing she could do. The virus
  98. just had to run it's course.
  99.  
  100. Deanna was sorry of course, but what good did that do him? Now
  101. he was stuck with a teenager for a counsellor.
  102.  
  103. And then there was Will Riker. He had gone to Pyrus XI for his
  104. shore leave. The sun on that desert planet was hotter than on
  105. Vulcan, and Will had 'forgotten' to wear protective clothing. No
  106. doubt showing his chest off, Picard thought. The first officer
  107. had been burnt badly. Now his skin was peeling and he was
  108. recovering from sunstroke. He looked like a shedding Reberteen
  109. goosing snake and felt worse. Dr Crusher had confined him to
  110. sickbay so that she could keep an eye on him.
  111.  
  112. So, now his first officer and counsellor were in sickbay until
  113. further notice, Jean-Luc was glad that he had chosen to go to
  114. Deep Space nine for his shore leave. He had enjoyed relaxing on
  115. the promenade, and catching up with a few old friends.
  116.  
  117. "Permission to come aboard sir!" the young Ensign requested with
  118. a snappy salute.
  119.  
  120. "Permission granted Ensign," Jean-Luc said returning her salute.
  121. "Sorry to hear about the transporter troubles down there."
  122.  
  123. "A temporary glitch. You know transporters - so unpredictable."
  124.  
  125. "I do indeed. Now if you would proceed to your quarters and
  126. unpack, I will arrange for you to meet Dr Crusher in sickbay in
  127. half an hour."
  128.  
  129. "Ten minutes should be fine sir."
  130.  
  131. "Alright then ten it is. Try not to have any malfunctions this
  132. time."
  133.  
  134. "Understood sir!" she said and exited quickly.
  135.  
  136. Picard  followed suit and headed for sickbay. As he walked in he
  137. saw Will sitting on the end of Deanna's bed: the two of them were
  138. playing chess. Neither of them noticed his entry.
  139.  
  140. He proceeded to Beverly Crusher's office where he knocked
  141. politely before entering and sitting down.
  142.  
  143. "Well Jean-Luc, what brings you here?"
  144.  
  145. "Just notifying you that the new ensign will be coming for her
  146. checkup in about ten minutes."
  147.  
  148. "Thank you, but couldn't you have contacted me by intercom?"
  149.  
  150. "I could have, but I need to speak to my two invalid officers as
  151. well."
  152.  
  153. "Ah. And here's me thinking you came in person just to see me."
  154.  
  155. "Well that too of course - but don't tell anyone," Picard said
  156. with a wink. "So, how are they doing?"
  157.  
  158. "Oh fine," Beverly said sarcastically. "They both keep insisting
  159. that they're fine and asking to return to their duties."
  160.  
  161. "How much longer will it be?"
  162.  
  163. "Will should be able to return to duties tomorrow, but Deanna
  164. will be off for at least another week."
  165.  
  166. "Oh. Will Commander Riker need to be put on light duties?"
  167.  
  168. "I don't see any reason why. Unless of course his back is still
  169. troubling him. I have never had a patient as stubborn as him.
  170. Except perhaps you."
  171.  
  172. "Thanks," Picard said dryly. "Well I'll just go and chat to them.
  173. Is there a time limit?"
  174.  
  175. "No. I've tried to restrict visiting times, but they sit there
  176. and talk to each other all day anyway."
  177.  
  178. "Okay. I'll try and be brief anyway." Jean-Luc exited Beverly's office 
  179. and approached Will and Deanna. "Who's winning?" he enquired.
  180.  
  181. "Deanna's been winning all day," Will said with a smile.
  182.  
  183. "Is something worng Captain?" Deanna asked, her face full of concern.
  184.  
  185. "No, no everything's fine. I just wanted to see how you two are doing, 
  186. and to ask your opinion on something."
  187.  
  188. "We're fine. We just want to get back to our duties. What did you want 
  189. our opinion about?"
  190.  
  191. Jen_Luc looked around and saw that no-one was within range before 
  192. continuing. "It's Beverly's birthday tomorrow, and I don't know what to 
  193. get her. Any ideas?"
  194.  
  195. Will broke into a grin as he said "How about a ring?"

  221. BTW, the first line is a reprise of part 1 - just to make sure you know 
  222. what's going on!

  225. Will broke into a grin as he said "How about a ring?"
  226.  
  227. "Pardon?" Jean-Luc was confused.
  228.  
  229. "Everybody on the ship knows you two have feelings for each
  230. other, so why don't you act on them? Ask her to marry you."
  231.  
  232. "I can't do that!" Jean-Luc was genuinely shocked. "What if she
  233. says no? Besides which she is - was -  my best friend's wife."
  234.  
  235. "If she says no you won't have lost anything. You'll just be able
  236. to remain friends. I can think of worse things than being married
  237. to Doctor Crusher."
  238.  
  239. "Counsellor?"
  240.  
  241. "I think it's a good idea," Deanna said, adding mentally besides
  242. the crew has been taking bets as to how long it would take them
  243. to get around to it. I bet Will suggested it so he could make a
  244. few bets with inside information. Out loud she added, "You should
  245. do it tactfully though. Lead up to it."
  246.  
  247. "You mean wine her and dine her and then pop the question?" Jean-
  248. Luc was starting to like the idea. Maybe it isn't so crazy after
  249. all, he thought.
  250.  
  251. "Yes. If I were you that would be how I would do it. Take her
  252. down to one of the holodecks. Make it somewhere special. A French
  253. restaurant perhaps. Violins playing quietly in the background
  254. etcetera. I'm sure you can work out the details." Will was
  255. genuinely surprised. He had not expected Picard to accept the
  256. idea so readily.
  257.  
  258. "Yes. Well thank you both. You've been a great help. I'll see you
  259. on duty tomorrow will I commander?" Jean-Luc changed the subject
  260. quickly as Beverly emerged from her office.
  261.  
  262. "If I'm permitted to leave sickbay," Will returned aiming it
  263. partly at Beverly.
  264.  
  265. "I think you should be able to return to duty tomorrow, providing
  266. you don't overdo it."
  267.  
  268. "Well I guess I will be returning to duty then sir."
  269.  
  270. "Alright then I'll see you tomorrow. Doctor, Counsellor." Jean-
  271. Luc nodded politely and beat a hasty retreat as Beverly looked
  272. like she was about to speak to him.
  273.  
  274. As Jean-Luc was leaving the new ensign entered. Beverly, who was
  275. following Jean-Luc stopped, and escorted the ensign over to a
  276. couch.
  277.  
  278. "You would be the new ensign Captain Picard told me about."
  279.  
  280. "Yes I am."
  281.  
  282. "Okay. Sit up on here and I'll be with you in a second." Beverly
  283. then went and got a tricorder. She went back and scanned the
  284. ensign with it. "Hmmm." Beverly furrowed her brow. "You have a
  285. couple of strange readings. Have you been feeling alright
  286. lately?"
  287.  
  288. "Well I was a bit off-colour yesterday when I woke up, but that
  289. passed about lunch-time."
  290.  
  291. "Have you been sleeping alone lately?"
  292.  
  293. "That's a very polite way of putting it. No. I haven't. For the
  294. past week I have been sleeping with my boyfriend. Mainly because
  295. we knew we probably wouldn't be seeing each other again for a
  296. while. But we were careful."
  297.  
  298. "Come into my office. I think we have something very important
  299. to discuss," Beverly said and led the way.
  300.  
  301. Once they were seated, Beverly continued "You have been pregnant
  302. recently." Beverly said it almost like an accusation.
  303.  
  304. "Yes I have." Dayna wasn't very willing to discuss it.
  305.  
  306. "Well, what happened?" Beverly was concerned at the young
  307. ensign's sudden change in attitude. She was now chewing a
  308. fingernail, and obviously did not want to talk about it.
  309.  
  310. "I had a miscarriage." The ensign had a sad expression on her
  311. face.
  312.  
  313. "Oh." Beverly was embarrassed. "I'm sorry. I haven't had a chance
  314. to review your medical records yet."
  315.  
  316. "That's okay. Happens all the time."
  317.  
  318. "How far along were you?" Beverly was a bit upset.
  319.  
  320. "Four months. I was starting to show too."
  321.  
  322. "And becoming attached to the idea of having a baby huh?"
  323.  
  324. "Yeah. I was bit upset when I miscarried. But I'm over it now."
  325.  
  326. "Okay. This won't affect how you do your duties will it?"
  327.  
  328. "No of course not! I don't think about it much any more. Anyway," she 
  329. said changing the subject, "I'm supposed to see counsellor Troi. I'm kinda 
  330. filling in for her until she's well again."
  331.  
  332. "What sort of duties will you be doing?"
  333.  
  334. "I'm going to be teaching classes to the younger children, and
  335. I'll be stationed in medical the rest of the time. So you'd
  336. better get used to the idea of having me around."
  337.  
  338. "In medical? I wasn't told about that." Beverly looked like
  339. someone was going to be in big trouble.
  340.  
  341. "I thought you would have been told by now." Dayna was confused.
  342. "Should I check with Captain Picard? I specialised on many things
  343. at the academy. I could easily be put into a different
  344. section."
  345.  
  346. "No, no. It's fine. I really needed someone else here, and I
  347. didn't expect to be getting someone so soon. Usually it takes
  348. ages to get more staff because we spend so much time away from
  349. Starbases. Well, welcome aboard Ensign Jefferies."
  350.  
  351. "Thanks. Now is Counsellor Troi one of the invalids playing chess
  352. out there?" The ensign nodded towards sickbay.
  353.  
  354. "Yes. She's the one lying in the bed."
  355.  
  356. "What can you tell me about her?"
  357.  
  358. "Well, she's half Betazoid, and she's a great counsellor."
  359. Beverly was clearly amused at the question. "Why do you ask?
  360. You're a full telepath and you should be able to pick out of my
  361. brain what you want to know."
  362.  
  363. "I would never do that! It wouldn't be polite! And besides, I
  364. needed to see what sort of relationship you have with her. I can
  365. tell that you are best friends, and that you share some of her
  366. deepest secrets and you some of hers."
  367.  
  368. "How could you tell all that if you weren't 'picking my brain'?"
  369.  
  370. "Just by the feeling you had when you were describing her. I'm
  371. also very perceptive. I can also tell that her and Commander
  372. Riker share something very precious."
  373.  
  374. "You are extremely perceptive."
  375.  
  376.  
  377. "Nah. I picked his brain. Sort of anyway. It's very easy to pick
  378. up thoughts when someone is thinking them as loudly as he is. I
  379. don't know how she can stand it. Ten minutes with him would drive
  380. me crazy. Anyway, I'd better go and see her. Catch ya later."
  381.  
  382. "Bye."
  383.  
  384. The ensign approached the bed on which Commander Riker and
  385. Counsellor Troi were playing chess. "I'm supposed to report to
  386. Counsellor Troi," she said boldly. "I hope I'm not interrupting.
  387. I'll come back later if I am."
  388.  
  389. "No, no Ensign. I was just about to admit defeat anyway"
  390. Commander Riker said with a grin. "I need to see Dr Crusher. I'll
  391. see you later Counsellor, Ensign."
  392.  
  393. "Bye Will," Deanna said. "So Ensign, what can I do for you?"
  394.  
  395. "Well I'm the new ensign and I was told that I would be kinda
  396. filling in for you until you're better."
  397.  
  398. "Okay. Well for starters what's your name? I can't keep calling
  399. you 'the new ensign' can I? You can call me Deanna by the way."
  400.  
  401. "My name is Dayna Maree Jefferies. My friends call me DJ, and my
  402. superiors call me 'a pain in the neck', but you can call me
  403. whatever you choose."
  404.  
  405. "I shall call you Dayna. Alright Dayna, Have you done any
  406. counselling before?"
  407.  
  408. "Yes I took a course on psychology at the academy. They make all
  409. Betazoids take it. All you have to do is ask them some questions
  410. about their problem, and then help them find a solution. Oh, and
  411. you have to seem interested in them or they won't talk. How am
  412. I doing?"
  413.  
  414. "Great. It's an interesting way to describe what I do, but it's
  415. fairly close to being accurate. You will also have to be on the
  416. bridge when the Captain needs you there."
  417.  
  418. "Why would the captain need me on the bridge?"
  419.  
  420. "He needs someone there who can give him further insight into
  421. certain situations. I'm usually on the bridge when I don't have
  422. any appointments. And, since you're new to the ship, I really
  423. should give you a session. I do that with all the new Ensigns,
  424. just to make sure they are doing okay. So, how did you come to
  425. be on the Enterprise? You must have done well in your graduating
  426. class at the Academy."
  427.  
  428. "Yes I did. I finished top of my class. I graduated with my
  429. brother and sister, they tied for second in the class" Dayna
  430. appeared to be amused by the question.
  431.  
  432.  
  433. "It takes two weeks for your first assignment to come through.
  434. What did you do after you graduated?" As soon as she asked the
  435. question, Deanna felt a great sense of amusement from Dayna.
  436.  
  437. Dayna looked a little bit embarrassed. "Perhaps you should
  438. rephrase your question as 'What didn't you do after you
  439. graduated?'! We went on a massive pub crawl. That's where you
  440. start at a pub, and go to every pub in the vicinity and drink
  441. until you can't stand up. It's only supposed to last one night,
  442. but our's lasted for a whole week. The only reason I know how
  443. long it lasted is because I have no memories of that week. Just
  444. of waking up with a terrible hangover a week later. I have no
  445. idea what I did during that time, but I woke up on starbase
  446. twelve in bed with someone I didn't know. I then had to inform
  447. the academy where I was, because I was supposed to be getting on
  448. a shuttle to starbase twelve that morning. I still don't know how
  449. I got there, or when. But I do know now who I woke up with."
  450.  
  451. "Who?" Deanna was intrigued and amused by Dayna's story.
  452.  
  453. "Perhaps I shouldn't say, because I know you know him." Dayna now
  454. looked even more embarrassed.
  455.  
  456. "Well it's your choice, but if you'd rather not say, then I
  457. understand." Deanna was in fact bursting to know, and she knew
  458. Dayna knew it.
  459.  
  460. "Okay. His name is..."
  461.

  492. On the bridge, Lieutenant Commander Data was monitoring some
  493. extremely unusual readings. He could not however discover the
  494. cause of the readings.
  495.  
  496. He was beginning to think that he should notify the captain, when
  497. the readings stopped. He then thought that perhaps it was nothing
  498. to worry about, and in any case he could not tell the captain
  499. because there was no longer anything wrong.
  500.                         ***************************
  501.  
  502. "You didn't! I can't believe you slept with him!"
  503.  
  504. "You wouldn't like to say it a bit louder would you? So that they
  505. can here it on the bridge perhaps?" Dayna was embarrassed and
  506. that made her sarcastic.
  507.  
  508. "Sorry. Now you mentioned before that you graduated with your
  509. brother and your sister. How is that?"
  510.  
  511. "Haven't you read my records yet? I'm one of a set of triplets.
  512. Well actually twins and another child. Jenna and I are identical
  513. twins, and Mark is our fraternal brother. Mark is the oldest,
  514. Jenna next, and I'm the youngest, although there's only twenty-
  515. three minutes between Mark and I. We're the only children in our
  516. family. After us, Mom and Dad couldn't face any more. I don't
  517. blame them either. Besides which, Betazoid triplets are rare. If
  518. they'd had any more children they wouldn't have had as many
  519. opportunities to show us off."
  520.  
  521. "Yes they are extremely rare. I wonder if my mother knows your
  522. mother?" Deanna cringed inwardly at the thought of her mother.
  523.  
  524. "I wouldn't be surprised. My mother knows everyone." Dayna looked
  525. like she was also cringing inwardly.
  526.  
  527. "So does my mother. She's the Betazoid ambassador. She makes it
  528. her business to know everyone."
  529.  
  530. "Sounds like my mother." Dayna grinned. "I gather from your
  531. reaction that you don't enjoy having your mother around. I know
  532. how you feel. My mother is too overbearing too. Anyway, back on
  533. track. Do you have an office?"
  534.  
  535. "Yes, but I do most of my counselling from my quarters. It helps
  536. people to feel more at home. Feel free to use the office if you'd
  537. prefer not to use your quarters."
  538.  
  539. "No. It's fine. My quarters are little small, but that should
  540. serve to make them seem more cosy."
  541.  
  542. "Are you sure?" Deanna said, a worried frown on her face.
  543.  
  544. "I'll be fine. Really. Don't worry. Anyway I'd better get going.
  545. I'm on duty in nine hours, and it always takes me at least an
  546. hour to wind down from an exciting day."
  547.  
  548. "You should try the holodeck to wind down," Deanna recommended.
  549.  
  550. "No I prefer music. How comprehensive are the music databases on
  551. this ship?"
  552.  
  553. "I'm not sure. They should have anything you ask for though. If
  554. they don't, then see Commander Data. He should know how to get
  555. what you want. You're not looking for something really obscure
  556. are you?"
  557.  
  558. "No. I'm just into twentieth century music. I'd better go now.
  559. Bye!"
  560.  
  561. "Bye," Deanna called. Whew, she thought. That is one complicated
  562. kid.
  563.  
  564. "Oh to be nineteen again," Will said as he returned to Deanna's
  565. bed.
  566.  
  567. "Nineteen? I got the impression she was much older than that."
  568. Deanna was a little confused. "At a guess I would say that she

  637. research vessel. They're both where they want to be."

  641. "Yes. We haven't been ever been apart for an extended period of

  643. properly. I fact I'm not even sure I said goodbye at all. I wish

  646. "I'm sure you did. Anyway you guys can communicate over long
  647. distances, so you aren't really apart are you?"

  649. "I guess not. So what are _you_ doing here. I didn't know you
  650. were on the _Enterprise_. How long have you been here?"

  652. "A while. I'm one of the bartenders. It's good work."

  654. "Yes I can imagine you fixing everyone's problems. Why didn't you
  655. become a counsellor? Mum always said you'd be good at that."

  657. "Counselling's such a hassle. Bartending's more sneaky. Besides,
  658. most people don't even know they're being counselled until
  659. they've come up with the solution to their problem. Why are _you_
  660. here?"

  662. "Well, I've been assigned to medical, but I'm also helping
  663. Counsellor Troi until she's well again, and I'll be doing some
  664. teaching in the school."

  666. "That should keep you out of trouble. Teaching eh? What are you
  667. going to be teaching?"

  669. "Music. Specifically twentieth century earth music. I've been
  670. really interested in it since the academy. There was a compulsory
  671. music class, and we had to do an assignment on any kind of music
  672. we found to be particularly interesting. They exposed us to many
  673. different kinds of music from many different planets. I took a
  674. particular interest in twentieth century earth music - especially
  675. the stuff they called 'Rock and Roll' and 'Heavy Metal'. I have
  676. yet to discover why they were called this though. I like it more
  677. than the new age stuff coming out now."
  678.  
  679. "Ah, that's nice. Are you qualified to teach, or are you just a
  680. consultant?"
  681.  
  682. "You don't really need to be qualified these days. If you know
  683. your subject well enough, you can teach it. Besides which, I've
  684. been teaching instrumental music since I was thirteen and I
  685. haven't had any problems."
  686.  
  687. "Yes, but you could play seven instruments by then. Have you
  688. picked up any more since then?"
  689.  
  690. "I've been pretty busy, so I've only had time to learn two more
  691. instruments - earth saxophone and euphonium."
  692.  
  693. "Only two eh? That makes a grand total of nine instruments. Not
  694. bad for someone of your talents. Do you still teach instruments?" 
  695.  
  696. "Only when I'm asked especially. I don't go advertising it around
  697. if you know what I mean. Anyway, I'd better get back to bed. I'm
  698. on duty in four hours and I'm really tired. See you round?"

  703. As Dayna entered Sickbay, she could sense there was something
  704. wrong. In fact it didn't take Betazoid telepathy to figure that
  705. out.
  706.  
  707. There were bodies in beds all around the room, and Doctor Crusher
  708. was scanning another one, a puzzled frown on her face.
  709.  
  710. "Oh good. I'm glad you're here," she said looking up at Dayna.
  711. "We've had something of an epidemic. So far twelve people have
  712. come down with a rather strange disease. It's not like anything
  713. I've ever seen before. I need you run a check on the computer to
  714. see if you can discover what it is. Here's a list of the
  715. symptoms," she handed Dayna a computer pad. "Don't take too long.
  716. I need to know if it's contagious, or fatal."
  717.  
  718. Dayna wasted no time in feeding the information into the
  719. computer. It took even less time for the results to come through. 
  720.  
  721. "Doctor Crusher? I think you should see this," Dayna called
  722. handing Beverly a computer pad.
  723.  
  724. Beverly read the results quickly."You're sure this is correct?
  725. Yes of course you're sure. Well we'd better start treating them." 
  726.  
  727. Beverly then busied herself giving orders and treating patients.

  730. "Captain Picard please report to sickbay."
  731.  
  732. As soon as Jean-Luc heard the request, he started feeling a sense
  733. of dread. It was the worried tone in Beverly's voice that clued
  734. him in that something was wrong.

  736. As he entered sickbay, someone gave him a surgical mask and
  737. instructed him to put it on. He did so and surveyed sickbay. It
  738. looked like a disaster zone. There were people everywhere, and
  739. they all had the same rash. He spied Doctor Crusher giving a
  740. hypospray to a young child.
  741.  
  742. "Captain. Could you come over here please." Beverly then handed
  743. the hypospray to a nurse and led the way to her office.
  744.  
  745. "Captain, it seems we have an outbreak of measles," she said as
  746. they entered her office.

  777. and resumed her normal duties.

  779. Dayna was - to say the least - overjoyed. She had neither enjoyed
  780. nor wanted the counselling position, and she was glad to be free
  781. of it.

  784. Data entered sickbay and Dayna saw him. She went over to him and
  785. said "Hello Commander. You're a little early. I'll go and see if
  786. Doctor Crusher is ready to see you yet."
  787.  
  788. "Please do not bother her yet," Data said as Dayna turned.

  790. "Okay," Dayna replied.
  791.  
  792. "I wish to speak to you first. I have a problem I believe you may
  793. be able to help me with."
  794.  
  795. "Me?" Dayna was - to say the least - surprised.
  796.  
  797. "I read in your academic file that you have an excellent rapport
  798. with computers. You did many essays on the history of computers
  799. and got extra credit."
  800.  
  801. "That's putting it mildly. Those essays were punishment resulting
  802. from my 'excellent rapport with computers' as you so eloquently
  803. put it." Dayna was flattered, and that made her sarcastic.
  804.  
  805. "That is precisely the reason I need _your_ help. I will contact
  806. you later and tell you when I shall need you. I believe you
  807. should go and fetch Doctor Crusher now."
  808.  
  809. As Dayna went to fetch the Doctor, she pondered over why her
  810. knowledge of the history of computers should be useful to someone
  811. as advanced as Data. She could not come up with even a single
  812. reason, so she pushed the thought out of her mind.
  813.                   **************************************
  814. [Beep!] went the doorbell.
  815.  
  816. "Come in!" Dayna called. She was sitting on her bed brushing her
  817. wet hair.
  818.  
  819.  
  820. Data entered her quarters and she called "In here." He entered
  821. her bedroom and stood in front of her.
  822.  
  823. "Sit down please," Dayna said patting the bed next to her. Data
  824. sat. "Now I assume you've come to tell me why you need my help." 
  825.  
  826. "Your assumption is correct Ensign. I need you to teach me to
  827. play a game."
  828.  
  829. "I beg your pardon?" Dayna almost fell of the bed in shock. "You
  830. want me to teach you to play a game?"
  831.  
  832. "That is correct Ensign."
  833.  
  834. "Okay. What's the game called? And why do you need someone who
  835. knows about computer history to teach you. I would've thought
  836. that you would know a lot more than me about computers and their
  837. history."
  838.  
  839. "That is correct. The game is called 'Tetris'. I found it while
  840. searching through the computer archives. It involves geometric
  841. shapes moving from the top of the screen to the bottom, but I
  842. cannot find a purpose, or a way to control their descent."
  843.  
  844. "Can you bring it up on my console screen?" Dayna asked him. The
  845. game intrigued her.
  846.  
  847. "Yes. It will not be difficult." They moved into Dayna's living
  848. area and over to her terminal. "Computer, access PC archives,
  849. directory 'Games', file 'Tetris'."
  850.  
  851. In a matter of seconds the opening screen of the game appeared.
  852.  
  853. Dayna took one look at the screen and headed for the replicator.
  854.  
  855. She was halfway there when suddenly she gasped and staggered. She
  856. managed to reach the relicator, and leaned against the wall for
  857. support.
  858.  
  859. "Are you alright Ensign?" Data asked, an approximation of a
  860. concerned look on his face. "Perhaps you should go to sickbay."
  861.  
  862. "Yes Sir," Dayna said weakly. "I need to see Counsellor Troi as
  863. well."
  864.  
  865. Data immediately tapped his communicator. "Counsellor Troi to
  866. sickbay please," he said into into it.
  867.  
  868. "I'm on my way," came the response.
  869.  
  870. "Can you walk?" Data asked Dayna.
  871.  
  872. Dayna attempted a couple of steps, but could not manage it.
  873.  
  874.  
  875. "It is alright," Data assured her. "I will carry you there."
  876.  
  877. Data easily lifted her and carried her all the way to sickbay.
  878.  
  879. Beverly saw them arrive, and was immediately in charge of the
  880. situation. She instructed Data to put Dayna on a couch, and then
  881. politely told him to move away.
  882.  
  883. Beverly began scans and tests on Dayna, while the Ensign squirmed
  884. and muttered.
  885.  
  886. Beverly was worried. There did not seem to be anything wrong, but
  887. Dayna's pain was off the scale.
  888.  
  889. Cousellor Troi entered, and went immediately to Dayna's bedside.
  890. She could only sense pain from Dayna, and was puzzled. It was not
  891. Dayna's pain.

  932. I hope _I_ never get appendicitis." Dayna paused and looked at
  933. Beverly. "Can I go now Doctor? I'm alright now."

  935. Beverly looked doubtful. "I'm not sure that's a good idea."

  937. "I'll be fine from now on. I promise I'll get plenty of rest."
  938. Dayna answered Beverly's unspoken commands.

  940. "Okay. Well if you need anything..."

  942. "Yes alright." Dayna couldn't bear being fussed over. She climbed
  943. down off the couch. "oh, by the way, what time is it?"

  945. When Beverly told her, Dayna cursed. She was late for a very
  946. important appointment. She practically ran out of Sickbay and
  947. into the nearest turbolift.

  951. Dayna entered Ten-Forward, and looked around. She spotted
  952. Commander Riker at a table close to the centre of the room, and 
  953. he motioned for her to join him.

  955. She sat at the table, and ordered an orange juice from the waiter
  956. hovering nearby. She made her apologies but Will brushed them
  957. aside.
  958.  
  959. "Do you remember what we discussed Dayna?" Will asked her,
  960. leaning over the table, his voice low enough so that people at
  961. nearby tables could not hear him.
  962.  
  963. "Yes, I remember," Dayna replied, her voice at the same volume.
  964.  
  965. "Let's do it then," Will said sitting back up.
  966.  
  967. Dayna turned away from him, a stubborn look on her face. She
  968. raised her voice and said, "I can't do it Sir. I also can't
  969. believe you're asking me to do it."
  970.  
  971. Will turned her face toward him. "It's not a request Ensign," He
  972. said loudly,"it's an order."
  973.  
  974. Dayna's expression changed from stubborn to defiant. She raised
  975. her voice further and stood. "I won't do it Sir, and you can't
  976. make me."

  978. "Then Ensign, you are relieved of duty, and I hereby confine you
  979. to quarters until further notice. Is that understood?"
  980.  
  981. "Yes Sir," Dayna replied, looking well and truly chastised.
  982.  
  983. "Dismissed then."

  985. As Dayna turned away, she had trouble hiding a small smile of
  986. triumph. Will saw it.
  987.  
  988. "Something amusing you Ensign?" Will asked, his voice dangerously
  989. calm.
  990.  
  991. "No Sir!" Dayna said beating a hasty retreat. _Phew!_ she
  992. thought. _That was close._
  993.  
  994. When Dayna reached her quarters, she found Counsellor Troi
  995. waiting outside. _Oh great,_ she thought. _Just the person I want
  996. to see right now._
  997.  
  998. "Nice to see you up and about again Counsellor," Dayna said out
  999. loud. "Come in. Please. Have a seat."
  1000.  
  1001. The two of them entered and seated themselves comfortably in
  1002. Dayna's small but comfortable living area.

  1004. "What's up Counsellor? No wait don't tell me. You were worried
  1005. at my abrupt departure from Sickbay. You know I went to meet Will
  1006. - Commander Riker - in Ten Forward. You also sense that we just
  1007. had a very public argument. You also sense that both he and I are
  1008. trying to hide our feelings from you. It's not intentional
  1009. Counsellor, it's just the fewer people who know what the argument
  1010. was about the better. If it was up to me, I'd tell you. But it's
  1011. not. Anyway I'm now confined to quarters and relieved of duty."
  1012.  
  1013. "Do you want to talk how it makes you feel then?" Deanna asked.
  1014.  
  1015. "Yeah I guess so. I'm a bit angry. And frustrated. Stop trying
  1016. to sense who my anger is directed at. You aren't allowed to know.
  1017. Trust me. Maybe you should go before I say something I
  1018. shouldn't."
  1019.  
  1020. "Alright. I'll come and check on you later," Counsellor Troi said
  1021. as she stood up to leave.
  1022.  
  1023. "I'd really rather you didn't," Dayna told her, mentally trying
  1024. to hide her real thoughts.

  1026. "Okay I won't then," Counsellor Troi said slightly huffily.
  1027. "Goodbye Ensign," she said on her way out the door.

  1029. "Bye Counsellor," Dayna said as the door shut. When she was sure
  1030. Deanna wasn't coming back, she put her head in her hands and
  1031. sobbed.

  1059. and again a third time. When it was obvious that she wasn't going
  1060. to answer, the visitor entered.

  1063. we've spoken."

  1065. "Sit down. I'll be out in a minute," Dayna called from her
  1066. bedroom. She kept her visitor waiting for a few minutes, and then
  1067. reluctantly entered her living area. She sat as far away from the
  1068. visitor as was possible. He noticed, but chose not to comment.

  1070. "Well did you have something more to say Sir?" Dayna asked her
  1071. visitor insolently.
  1072.  
  1073. "Quit acting. You know I have to check on your progress. I've got
  1074. reports to make."
  1075.  
  1076. "I'm not acting Sir. I just had to lie to Counsellor Troi. I
  1077. _hate_ lying, especially to Betazoids."
  1078.

  1080. "Well you'd better get used to it, Lieutenant. No one must know
  1081. who you really are or why you're on board. It would jeopardise
  1082. the mission. Have there been any problems?"
  1083.  
  1084. "Yes. I think Counsellor Troi's going to be a major problem.
  1085. She's just too sensitive. There's no way I can stop her either,
  1086. unless I cut her out totally. Then she'd really be suspicious.
  1087. Are you sure we can't tell her?" Dayna was looking extremely
  1088. concerned.
  1089.  
  1090. "I don't have permission to bring anyone else into our
  1091. confidence. Not even the Captain knows. The fewer people who
  1092. know, the better."
  1093.  
  1094. "Okay. I'll just have to block her entirely. It's going to make
  1095. her very suspicious though. I can't guarantee she won't keep
  1096. asking questions. She was here just before, and she was very
  1097. concerned. I couldn't do anything except pretend I didn't want
  1098. her around. How am I supposed to gain her confidence if I can't
  1099. even talk to her?"
  1100.  
  1101. "I'll have a talk with her. Don't take offence at what I tell her
  1102. or act surprised at her reaction. Okay?"
  1103.  
  1104. Dayna suddenly stood up. "No way! You can't tell her that!" Dayna
  1105. went over to her replicator. "Ice cold lemonade please." The
  1106. lemonade materialised and she took a long drink. "Please don't
  1107. say that to her," she pleaded. "I wouldn't be able to look her
  1108. in the eye again if you tell her something like that. Especially
  1109. since it's not true."
  1110.  
  1111. Her visitor looked at her suggestively. "How about if we _make_
  1112. it true," he said.
  1113.  
  1114. Dayna considered it for a moment. "Alright," she conceded. "But
  1115. I'm not sure it's the right thing to do. If anyone else finds
  1116. out..." she left it hanging.

  1118. "No one else is _going_ to find out unless either of us tells
  1119. them. _I_ won't tell anyone. Now are you sure about this? There's
  1120. still time to change your mind. If you've never done this before-

  1135. "Yes, alright. I'm awake." He didn't move.

  1137. "Oh I'm sorry. I thought I meant today," Dayna said
  1138. sarcastically. She rolled him out of bed. He hit the floor with
  1139. a satisfying thud.
  1140.  
  1141. "I was moving," he protested in a muffled voice from the floor.
  1142.  
  1143. "Yeah it looked like it too. Come on. Data's going to be here any
  1144. second. Get dressed." Dayna threw his uniform down next to him.
  1145. "If you're not going to leave before Data get's here, at least
  1146. put some clothes on. No point spelling it out for him."
  1147.  
  1148. "Alright," he said, standing up and beginning to dress. "I'll
  1149. come back later and let you know what Counsellor Troi says." He
  1150. finished dressing and gave Dayna a quick kiss. "See you later
  1151. darlin'," he said in an imitation of a Southern drawl.
  1152.  
  1153. "Ya'll come back now y'hear," she replied in a better imitation.

  1156. "Thank you for your help Ensign," Data said as he was leaving.
  1157.  
  1158. "Anytime Sir," Dayna replied, almost pushing him out the door.

  1160. When the door closed, Dayna breathed a sigh of relief. _Phew_,
  1161. she thought. _Now I can get some sleep. What a day._
  1162.  
  1163. As she was getting ready for bed, her door chime rang. _Not
  1164. again,_ she thought, and went to answer it. It was Counsellor
  1165. Troi again.
  1166.  
  1167. "I hope I'm not disturbing you," she said apologetically. "But
  1168. I'd like a quick chat."
  1169.  
  1170. "Sure. Come in Counsellor," Dayna said, groaning inwardly.
  1171.  
  1172. "I've just had a talk with-"
  1173.  
  1174. "Oh. I thought that might be why you were here. Listen, I'm
  1175. sorry."
  1176.  
  1177. "What for?" Counsellor Troi looked puzzled.
  1178.  
  1179. "Well I thought you might not approve, and-"
  1180.  
  1181. "It's not for me to approve or disapprove. What you do on your
  1182. own time is your business. Do you want to talk about it?"
  1183.  
  1184. "You mean compare notes?" Dayna laughed. "I don't think so. I'm
  1185. also sorry for the way I acted before."
  1186.  
  1187. "I understand. I often get stand-offish when I think someone
  1188. doesn't approve of what I'm doing. Well, you look tired. I'll go
  1189. and let you get some sleep. Goodnight Ensign."
  1190.  
  1191. "Goodnight Counsellor. And thanks."
  1192.  
  1193. "Anytime," Deanna said as she went out the door.

  1196. Dayna had a troubled sleep and awoke feeling like she hadn't
  1197. slept at all. She had to see Doctor Crusher that day for a
  1198. routine medical. Privately she thought Doctor Crusher just wanted
  1199. to make sure she really was alright after the incident the day
  1200. before.
  1201.  
  1202. Dayna decided to skip breakfast, as she didn't feel like it. She
  1203. walked fast, and arrived in Sickbay a few minutes early.
  1204.  
  1205. "I'll be right with you," Beverly called. "Just take a seat over
  1206. there," she continued, pointing to a medical couch.
  1207.  
  1208. Dayna went over and seated herself.
  1209.  
  1210. Shortly Beverly appeared and started running tests. At one point
  1211. she look puzzled, and made some notes on her computer padd.
  1212.  
  1213. When she finished, they moved into her office to discuss the
  1214. results. Doctor Crusher still looked puzzled.
  1215.  
  1216. "How have you been feeling lately?" she asked Dayna.
  1217.  
  1218. "Fine," Dayna replied. "Why?"
  1219.  
  1220. "Just that some of your readings are a little strange. It must
  1221. be a result of what happened yesterday I suppose. Well, you're
  1222. quite fit, and you can go now. I'd like to re-check your readings
  1223. next week though, just to be certain you're okay. I'll let you
  1224. know when."

  1254. visitor, who was making a repeat visit. "She didn't seem in the
  1255. least upset."

  1257. "Does she have a reason to be?" he replied putting his arm around
  1258. her and blowing in her ear. "She's an adult, and can understand
  1259. mutual attraction when she sees it."
  1260.  
  1261. Dayna pushed his arm away and stood up. "Who said I was attracted
  1262. to you?" she said paranoidly??. 
  1263.  
  1264. Her visitor raised his eybrows. "I can tell when a woman is
  1265. attracted to me. I can also tell when she refuses to admit it to
  1266. herself."
  1267.  
  1268. Dayna turned her back on him. She chewed her lip and thought
  1269. about what he'd just said. She knew he was right, but didn't want
  1270. to actually admit it to him.
  1271.  
  1272. "Well, I _like_ you," Dayna finally said. "I guess you could call
  1273. it attraction." She paused, and turned around to face him. " Are
  1274. you on duty at the moment?" He shook his head. "Well now that
  1275. you've told Counsellor Troi we're sleeping together, it seems a
  1276. pity to only do it once don't you think?" she asked him coyly.
  1277.  
  1278. His answer was a long passionate kiss.

  1280. "Did you confine me to quarters so you would have a reason to
  1281. keep visiting me, or did you have something else in mind?" Dayna
  1282. asked her visitor. It was several hours later, and they were
  1283. lying in bed talking.
  1284.  
  1285. "No, you remember why I confined you to quarters don't you?"
  1286. Dayna thought for a moent and then nodded. "Well that won't be
  1287. able to happen until this evening. Don't panic. Everything's
  1288. going according to plan. Just be patient." He paused and looked
  1289. down at her. "Now where were we..."

  1292. "Computer what time is it?" Dayna suddenly called.
  1293.  
  1294. "The time is eighteen-hundred hours and twenty-eight minutes,"
  1295. came the reply.
  1296.  
  1297. "Okay lets move Will." Dayna nudged him hard in the ribs. "It's
  1298. time to get ready."

  1301. Wearing a hooded cloak over her uniform, Dayna walked next to
  1302. Commander Riker. They were about to enter transporter room three
  1303. when Dayna suddenly stopped, pulling on Riker's arm to make him
  1304. stop too.
  1305.  
  1306. He turned to face her. "What's wrong? We'll be late if we don't
  1307. go in now. We can't keep someone as important as her waiting."
  1308.  
  1309. "Something's wrong. It doesn't feel right. It's okay now. Let's
  1310. go." She turned him around, and they entered the transporter room
  1311. together.
  1312.  
  1313. Will nodded at the operator and a figure slowly materialised. She
  1314. was, like Dayna, wearing a hooded cloak. She was the same height
  1315. as Dayna, and when she stepped off the transporter pad, she
  1316. walked similarly.
  1317.  
  1318. She embraced Dayna, nodded at Riker, and the three of them left
  1319. the transporter room without exchanging a word.
  1320.  
  1321. They walked back to Dayna's quarters in silence. When they
  1322. entered, Riker engaged the lock.
  1323.  
  1324. Dayna and the other hooded figure sighed in unison and removed
  1325. their cloaks. Dayna then threw all decorum aside and hugged the
  1326. newcomer.
  1327.  
  1328. There was a slight cough from behind them as Riker tried to get
  1329. their attention. "This is no time for a family reunion. We have
  1330. a purpose, and not long to complete it. You can do the reunion
  1331. thing later. Right now we have work to do."
  1332.  
  1333. Dayna reluctantly let go of her sister, all three sat down, and
  1334. started their planning.

  1337. "Counsellor Troi won't buy that," Dayna said. "She'll know
  1338. immediately what's happening. It'll take her less than a minute
  1339. to sense what's going on."
  1340.  
  1341. "But surely your sister and you are so similar that she can
  1342. reason a way around it?" Riker said stubbornly. "There's no other
  1343. way. If we have to we can fix Counsellor Troi so she won't be
  1344. able to say anything. Dayna, you're in medical, you're in charge
  1345. of taking care of that. I don't care how. If Deanna ruins this,
  1346. we'll all pay with our lives." He turned to face Dayna's sister.
  1347. "Jenna, you'll need to be ready to act at the right moment. If
  1348. anything should go wrong, remember that both you and your sister,
  1349. and myself are expendable. No one else is." Jenna nodded.
  1350. "Alright are we ready? Good. Then let's get a good night's sleep
  1351. and be ready just after beta shift takes over tomorrow. Jenna,
  1352. you can sleep in Dayna's quarters with her. I'll be around early
  1353. in the morning, so don't spend all night talking. Good night
  1354. ladies."
  1355.  
  1356. "Good Night Sir," the twins replied in unison. They then looked
  1357. at each other and burst out laughing.
  1358.  
  1359. After Riker left, Dayna hugged her sister tightly. "I'd better
  1360. go and borrow a hypospray from sickbay Jen'," she said. "If
  1361. anyone comes to the door, don't answer. I'll be back soon."

  1366. "Get up sis," Jenna replied. "Riker's coming. You slept in. Have
  1367. a shower quick." Dayna did so.

  1369. "Hello Sir, come in," Jenna said at the door. Ater the door shut,
  1370. she continued, "My sister's in the shower. She'll be out in a
  1371. minute. Have a seat. I'll see if I can hurry her up."
  1372.  
  1373. "Quick Dayna!" Jenna whispered to her sister. "He's here. He's
  1374. not sure whether I'm you or me. Wanna have some fun?"
  1375.  
  1376. "Alright. My memories are yours but don't embarrass me," Dayna
  1377. whispered back. "I'm warning you Jenna. If you embarrass me
  1378. you'll live to regret it."
  1379.  
  1380. "Okay Sis," Jenna said walking back to Dayna's living quarters.
  1381. "So, Will, I hear you've been sleeping with my sister. Was she
  1382. good?"
  1383.  
  1384. Riker's jaw dropped.
  1385.  
  1386. _You're dead!_ Jenna heard in her mind.
  1387.  
  1388. _Trust me sis_ she thought back.

  1390. _Do I have a choice?_ Dayna thought.

  1392. "So was she good?" Jenna repeated. "She was wasn't she?" Jenna
  1393. pressed on. Before Jenna could say another word, Dayna appeared,
  1394. fully clothed and ready to go. "Told you I could hurry her,"
  1395. Jenna said smugly.
